Man on porch with rifle; standoff ends 800 block of Eastern SE



GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A police standoff on Grand Rapids southeast side ended when a 49-year-old Grand Rapids man surrendered to police.
Grand Rapids Police were called to the 800 block of Eastern after the 49-year-old pointed a rifle at someone.
The call to police came in around 11:45 Friday night, by 12:30 a.m. police had the man off the porch and in custody.
When police arrived in the 800 block of Eastern they did not immediately approach the house. Instead took up positions in the area where they could see the house.
They were able to see the homeowner sitting on his porch with a rifle. The man made several motions indicating that the was loading the gun.
The 49-year-old homeowner could be seen going in and out of his home several times during the standoff.
Grand Rapids police closed off several streets in the area as they set up a perimeter around the home.
Police could be heard calling out to the man to come out of his home, and that he would not be hurt.
After about 45 minutes police were able to get the man to put down the gun and come off the porch.
The man, who police are not identifying, is being held in the Kent County Jail.
Police are working to secure a search warrant for the man's house.
No one was injured during the police standoff, and the incident remains under investigation.
